This fantastic new Three Cities Group R161 million hotel designed by Stauch Vorster Architects has recently opened its doors and transformed the face of the Gateway precinct on the Umhlanga Ridge in Durban.

The four-storey building incorporates 146 guest rooms, large and sub-divisible conference rooms able to accommodate up to 800 guests, a roof top pool, pool side bar and valet parking.

The ‘green building’ incorporates many sustainable design features including the R7 million prominent leafy facade screen which provides solar shading and minimises air-conditioning requirements, low-energy light bulbs throughout, low-emissivity glass on the curtain wall glazing, the lifts all have regeneration drive systems and chilled air is recycled from the hot water heat pumps amongst much.

The main contractor was Aveng Grinaker LTA, the principal agents were CHT Architects who also designed the restaurants & conference facilities and the client (the one with the money to invest) was the Old Mutual Investment Group. Ibuya were the Consulting Engineers on the project for whom I recently photographed this eye-catching new facility.
